the combat just sucks and is boring but is mercifully very easy to get through (excepting the boss battles, which can pose a challenge especially if you're having issues aiming). be sure to take the time to do the side quests during the story, too - the game's strength lies frequently in the personalities and connections of its townsfolk, and working with them in these smaller ways can really bolster your experience of the main storyline. it attracts a lot of comparison to twin peaks, and rightly so, but be prepared for the game to start shedding the more high-brow aspects of that show around the halfway point of the main plot - it starts to meander out into sophomoric-nonsensical territory pretty fast after that.
the game, when it's playable, has this ugly-cute charm i think is easy to appreciate if you're a fan of quirky or janky games. i've heard the switch version works well.
I imagine as new windows versions become commonplace, this game will become even more difficult to play, so i'd just recommend trying to grab one of the console versions if you're interested. it's a lot of extra work to just continue the story, and it's not on any intentional level. i enjoyed the layer of challenge it took to get the game to run and to keep running, it was almost a game in itself having to stop playing, copy over files to an unpatched version of the game and run it in windows 98 compatability mode to get past certain consistent crashes, but that's something entirely personal to me and i cannot in good faith recommend anyone else try to work with that experience. never experienced that in any game before or since. a few of the bugs i encountered were as unique as the game, too - for some reason my right analog stick controls were totally swapped, with left tilt moving the camera down and upward tilt moving the camera right. extremely janky, so it didn't feel like a stretch to go from the awful sound mixing and weird dialogue in a cutscene straight to a crash, lol. I will say, this is one of the only games i've ever played where the totally nonfunctional port of the game, its constant weird bugs, memory leaks, and crashes actually feel fitting to the tone and world of the game - it's difficult to describe why, but the whole thing is just.
wouldn't even recommend picking this one up on sale, if you're playing it for FREE you still paid too much. certainly interesting, and i wouldn't recommend against playing a better version of it, but this port is totally abysmal and both the devs and steam should feel ashamed about selling this for any price at all.
